VIRTUAL REALITY FILMMAKING

I have always known that I wanted to pursue a career that would merge both creativity and positive social change. I first started studying 3D modeling in college while simultaneously working as an intern at a virtual reality company that was using VR to create documentaries that highlighted social issues all around the world. The benefit of filming these stories in virtual reality was that the viewer felt immersed in the experience, and there was a significantly higher increase in empathy. This was especially important when these documentaries would be viewed at the UN Summit and by philanthropists or anyone wanting to make a difference towards the cause they were experiencing.

In 2017, I was accepted to the New York Film Academy's Virtual Reality Filmmaking Program, where for my final project I worked alongside Black Lives Matter Greater New York and directed a virtual reality documentary following a widow named Angelique Negroni- Kearse who lost her husband Andrew Kearse to police brutality.

Living in New York City really fueled my other passion for exploring new cultures and experiencing different ways of life, and upon graduating from NYFA, I decided to take a few gap years from creative pursuits and became a flight attendant to gain a greater understanding about the world. From 2018 to 2022, I was based in Chicago and traveled all throughout North America for work. When I had time off, I would travel to different countries, and I believe exposing myself to all of the experiences each culture provided will stay with me for my entire lifetime.

Even after having acquired these new life experiences, I still believed that design had the potential to play an essential role in tackling a lot of the world's common issues; especially after having experienced some of these issues firsthand. One of the most reoccurring issues I noticed throughout my travels, was the topic of sustainability, or sometimes lack thereof, when it came to material waste. In 2023 I applied to Think Tank Training Centre's online program and after studying under some of the most talented creators in the field, I chose to center my final mentorship term around digital fashion because of the growing impact it has when it comes to sustainability. Under the guidance of my mentor Roei Derhi,  I decided to recreate one of Iris Van Herpen's couture pieces, and the complexity of the project really strengthened my skills in the digital fashion space. Moving forward, I hope to use all of these skills and experiences to help create sustainability focused practices in a creative career.
